Principles & Practice of Constraint Programming by Pascal Van Hentenryck,

Principles & Practice of Constraint Programming by Pascal Van Hentenryck,
This collection of twenty-three original papers represents the first effort to bring together the work of constraint programming researchers scattered across multiple disciplines artificial intelligence paradigm programming and across the world. The collection contributes to the understanding of the common principles of this emerging general paradigm, the investigation of its theoretical foundations as well as applications to real-world computing problems. It is organized around themes of concurrency artificial intelligence paradigm programming and reactive systems, languages artificial intelligence paradigm programming and environments, algorithms, computer graphics, artificial intelligence paradigm programming and artificial intelligence. Constraint programming aims at supporting a wide range of complex applications, which are often modeled naturally in terms of constraints. Early work, in the 1960s artificial intelligence paradigm programming and 1970s, made use of constraints in computer graphics, user interfaces, artificial intelligence paradigm programming and artificial intelligence. Such work introduced a declarative component in otherwise-procedural systems to reduce the development effort. The mid-1980s have witnessed the emergence of general-purpose programming languages based on constraints, such as constraint logic programming artificial intelligence paradigm programming and concurrent constraint programming, with significant applications in academia artificial intelligence paradigm programming and industry. Today, an increasing number of researchers from all over the map of computing are looking at different aspects of this new computational paradigm.

Planner programming language - Planner (often seen in publications as "PLANNER") is a programming language designed by Carl Hewitt at MIT, and first published in 1969. Hewitt (then a student of Marvin Minsky, Seymour Papert and Mike Paterson) championed the "procedural embedding of knowledge" in the form of high level procedural plans in contrast to the logical approach pioneered by John McCarthy who advocated expressing knowledge declaratively in mathematical logic for artificial intelligence (AI).

REFAL programming language - REFAL (for REcursive Functions Algorithmic Language) is a functional programming language targeted at symbol manipulation: string processing, translation, artificial intelligence. Refal-5 is a dialect of Refal developed at the City College of New York and supported by Refal Systems Inc.

MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory - The MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory was an interdisciplinary research entity at MIT which became one of the most influential and accomplished in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics. Research at MIT in the field of Artificial Intelligence began in 1959.

International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence - International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) is a no-profit organization incorporated in California. Its major activity is organizing the biennial International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the premier international gathering of artificial intelligence researchers and practitioners.
